Concord, NC — When the final checkered flag of the 2009 season flew and Jason Meyers climbed out of his car, one of the first things he said, was that he could not wait to head to Florida and open the 2010 campaign. The California native wrapped up the 2009 season on a rail, finishing eighth or better in each of the final 17 events of the season, with 12 of those being podium finishes and five of those being wins. He came up just 19 points shy of winning his first World of Outlaws title in what wound up being the closest three-way points race in series history with Donny Schatz and Joey Saldana.
“I’m absolutely anxious,” said Meyers when asked if he was ready for the 2010 season. “One thing for me this year was to get back home and even get away from the racing a little bit and get try to get that inspiration to get back in the race car. The last four or five years I have spent the winter in Australia, then the Chili Bowl and then the season comes around and you think, ‘Oh my goodness, the season is here already.’ I love what I do and I love getting in the car every night, but I was looking to get that eagerness that you can’t wait to get back in the race car We fortunately achieved that and I can’t wait to get going.” After an off-season of hard work in the shop, the entire Elite Racing team which is co-owned by Chris Luck, Guy Stockbridge and Meyers himself, are geared up for another run at the World of Outlaws title in 2010, beginning at the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals by at Volusia Speedway Park, February 5-7. He won at the half-mile in 2008 with the World of Outlaws and has six consecutive Top-10 finishes at the track. “What the biggest key has been the last few years is to be on top of the rule changes and I think you’ll see that again this year,” explained Meyers of starting strong at Volusia. “We came out a couple of years ago and had a very successful run down there and last year we came out and we were not very successful with the rule changes with the wing. This year you have the tire change. Those tracks are a lot different than any other track in the country, with the soil and sand. It takes quite a bit different set-up. We have worked hard this winter.” With the switch to Goodyear tires in 2010, one of the strongest fields in the history of the DIRTcar Nationals is expected as Volusia, as drivers from coast-to-coast look to turn some laps on the new rubber in preparation for their season’s back home. Meyers has 13 career Top-10 finishes in the DIRTcar Nationals, including five last season in a combination of World of Outlaws and All Star Circuit of Champions events. “There is no tougher way to start a season,” he noted of heading to Florida. “You go down there and have the top guys from all across the country there. It’s in the vicinity of the East Coast cars and also there is nothing else going on. It’s a tough track and a tough place to tame. You get a lot of great competition. You really need to come out of the box strong. You can come out of the box strong and just barely make the main events. If you come out of the box great you may win one. I don’t think there is anything tougher to start a season than going down to Volusia.” Meyers entire team is intact from last year with D.J. Lindsey as crew chief, along with Brian Bloomfield and Glen Beaton helping turn the wrenches. Meyers and Lindsey have been together since the 2005 season, which ranks them among the driver/crew chief combinations that have been together the longest in the series. Also, all of the team’s marketing partners are back as well, providing them the resources they need to compete for a World of Outlaws title. “There are a couple of things that I believe are paramount to having a successful team,” explained the veteran driver. “Number one is the team members, your people. For us, that is the people involved in our team both on the track and off the track. To have our whole crew and all of our sponsors coming back from last year is huge for us and something I think has helped us get to the level we are at and hopefully will help us get to the next level.” After beginning to utilize a brand new shop located at John Force Racing in Brownsburg, Indiana last summer, Meyers and his team will begin their first full season operating out of the facility in 2010. Being centrally located, it will help the team be able to return to the shop numerous times over the course of the always grueling season which stretches from early February through early November and take the series across the country a couple of times as well as to Canada. “I think it’s been a big advantage for us,” stated Meyers. “We only make moves that we feel will be an advantage to us. Our shop in Brownsburg has been very good. Having a centralized location for our team has been a big help. We’ve been able to get back to the shop a lot more and the fact that we build our own cars and engines and things like that, having the ability to get back to the shop more and work on those things more has helped us.” Meyers has finished second in points each of the last two years and three times in his career as he seeks his first World of Outlaws title. He heads into the 2010 season with 35 career A-Feature wins with the series which is 12th best on the World of Outlaws all-time list. Another of the strongest fields in the 30-plus year history of the series is being assembled to hit the road for the nine month, nearly 80 race campaign. “Everything has to click and there are a lot of elements to it,” shared Meyers when asked what it takes to compete night in and night out. “Everything has to come together. Everyone was working hard and it started coming to us. We didn’t have the best race cars at the start of the year. We had a great team and good equipment, just not the right equipment. We worked hard on it and made changes throughout the year and that is what a great team does. I am very proud of our guys last year. They kept at it and put in a lot of hours and at the end of the day we got some great cars that were able to put us up front, where we were at the end of the season.” Meyers looks to build on the momentum that he and his team built last year, which saw them win a total of nine races and led the series with 55 Top-10 finishes. He was one of just three drivers that led over 300 laps of feature racing competition. He led the series with 10 wins in the dash to earn pole position and was also near the top of the leader board in fast time honors with eight. “Hopefully it’s not us having to make 19 points and its someone else having to make them up on us,” quipped Meyers. “Everyone that is involved with this team, my fellow car owners Chris Luck and Guy Stockbridge. Chris came on board the last few years as a car owner and has been a phenomenal asset to our team. He has allowed us to bring in the people that we need and the resources that we need to be able to go out and do what we do. I think we have what we need to make up those points from last year. We just have to start the season right. We just need a good steady year. We don’t necessarily need to come out and light the world on fire, but we need to be steady and be there every night and carry that consistency that we are known for through the year.” The 2010 World of Outlaws season kicks off with the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park February 5-7.
